The Japanese term monozukuri literally means ‘production process’, but the concept actually covers a far wider spectrum, designating the intelligence and mastery of production mechanisms that make it possible to achieve excellence. By exhibiting contemporary graphic creations that are emblematic of printing methods, Sacha Léopold and Charles Beauté reveal technical specificities and their repercussions on the creative process. The exhibition considers both the production phase and the end products that emerge from the machinery.

“Graphic designers’ work is sometimes shown in the form of sketches and explorations, but usually in its finished form or in museum-like stagings. We have chosen to turn the spotlight on printing films, die-cut forms, embossing plates, silkscreens, and so on… order to highlight this key stage in contemporary graphic design, which involves more than the mere mechanics of the tools.”

La calligrafia islamica. Dalla calligrafia ai graffiti III parte

Come avviene anche nella lingua greca ed ebraica gli arabi danno un valore numerico ad ogni singola lettera, classificandola in tre serie di 9: unità da 1 a 9, decine da 10 a 90, centinaia da 100 a 900 e infine 1000. Questa organizzazione delle lettere tramite valori numerici e i calcoli che si possono ottenere sommando i loro singoli valori all’interno di una parola ha portato allo sviluppo della tecnica dell’abağad per speculazioni mistico spirituali: “Ciascuna lettera araba è divenuta anche l’iniziale di un attributo di Allah. Questo insieme di lodi ha condotto alla formazione di un sistema, in cui ciascuna lettera vale non per la cifra alfabetica consueta, ma in base al valore numerico dell’attributo divino di cui è iniziale. La lettera  alif per esempio, iniziale dello stesso nome di Dio, di solito vale 1, ma con questo sistema acquista il valore di 66 che è il risultato della somma delle lettere che compongono il nome di Allah calcolato secondo il metodo abağad. Questo sistema viene largamente usato nella teologia simbolica per invocazioni quali ausilio della meditazione. Mistici e indovini lo usano per comporre sistemi di calcolo divinatorio”. I colori che vengono utilizzati sono anch’essi fondamentali per un interpretazione mistico spirituale e come aiuto per la suggestione immaginativa di cui abbiamo già parlato.

Cinemas du Maghreb

Enthousiasme, cinq mois après le début des soulèvements dans le monde arabe, événements historiques, la sixième édition de notre Panorama des cinémas du Maghreb vient tout d'abord saluer avec bonheur et espoir cet élan populaire. Comment en effet ne pas rendre hommage à cette nouvelle génération de l'autre côté de la Méditerranée qui vient secouer les idées reçues et casser les stéréotypes, tellement bien ancrés qu'on les croyait immuables.

L'espoir que ces révolutions populaires soulèvent est un appel à repenser le monde dans lequel nous vivons. C'est modestement l'invitation que nous lançons avec les trente-quatre films à découvrir pendant les cinq jours de notre festival. Reflets des contradictions de leur époque, remise en cause de tabous, échos plus ou moins proches aux raisons qui amènent des hommes et des femmes à se révolter, interrogations sur les nécessités qui poussent des êtres humains à quitter leur pays, souffrance de l'exil, appel à la liberté par la musique, affirmation de droits fondamentaux, l'ensemble de ces films forment un hymne commun, celui de croire en la capacité du cinéma à faire bouger les lignes. Fictions, documentaires, courts et moyens métrages, venant de Tunisie, d'Algérie et du Maroc, ce sont tous les genres du cinéma qui seront ainsi visités. De l'excès de Fissures de Hicham Ayouch qui filme l'errance à Tanger de trois marginaux qui s'aiment et s'abîment dans l'alcool, la drogue et la passion, à la première comédie musicale algérienne Essaha (la Place) de Dahmane Ouzid, abordant de nombreux sujets de société (exil, drogue, violence, condition de la femme, conflit de générations…), en passant par les splendides courts métrages du collectif tunisien Exit qui résonnent fortement avec les mouvements tunisiens en cours, ces films nourriront très certainement les appétits de tous ceux qui s'intéressent à ces frémissements du paysage par le cinéma.

Si le cinéma est cette fenêtre ouverte sur le monde, les films de cette édition sont grands ouverts sur ces sociétés maghrébines si proches de nous. Les révoltes en cours du côté du monde arabe nous interpellent car c'est aussi une part de notre avenir qui se joue de l'autre côté de la Méditerranée, il est temps de construire ce destin commun aux deux rives de la grande bleue. C'est l'humble contribution que nous souhaitons apporter avec ce Panorama.

Für das Buch «Vorausgedacht» zeichnete JUNGHÄNI'S eine Illustrationsserie. Mit einer eigenständigen Illustrationsart wurde das Thema Zukunft auf abstrakte Weise interpretiert. Sämtliche Illustrationen wurden mit Bleistift angefertigt, um eine perfekte Ausgangslage für den anschliessenden Gummidruck zu schaffen.

SOME CONFERENCE

Some Conference,
a one day conference intersecting at the crossroads of art and design and will be held at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle (www.burg-halle.de). Just like Some Magazine (http://www.somemag.com), this conference will be curated and run by students. The goal of the conference is to cross conventional borders and to depict new and exciting interfaces. For us, this is not about putting on a show, but rather about creating discourse and experimenting. SOME conference will be held for the first time this year and will take place annually in the future. Since the event is not an expensive meet and greet for industry professionals, but rather similar to an exciting festival, there will be no entrance fee.

inside out by Takeshi Hosaka Architects

Usually when it rains inside a home the reaction is distress, followed by anger and then lawsuits. However, not for Takeshi Hosaka Architects, who’s latest home, “inside out,” was designed for a couple and their two cats, all who wanted the freedom to go in and out while always remaining within their home. The home’s bedrooms and bathrooms are surrounded by a membrane of carefully designed openings that allow wind, light, sun and rain to enter into that section of the home.

As it turns out, Takeshi Hosaka Architects knows a thing or two about bringing the outdoors, in. If you don’t believe me check out the other posts we’ve done on the architect. He is clearly very interested in the relationship between habitat and environment.

Julian Beever: che cadano i fantasmi e appaia la realtà

Julian Beever (1959) è un artista britannico.

Beever crea disegni trompe-l'œil con il gesso su pavimenti e marciapiedi dalla metà degli anni novanta. Le sue opere vengono create utilizzando una proiezione chiamata anamorfosi per creare l'illusione tridimensionale quando viene visto da una determinata angolazione. È soprannominato Pavement Picasso.

In Italia potrebbe essere definito un madonnaro anche se risulta veramente difficile accostarlo all'arte dei madonnari tradizionali.

Oltre a queste opere, Beever, esegue pitture murali con vernici acriliche e riproduzioni di opere famose.
Lavora come free-lance e crea murales a richiesta. Ha lavorato nel Regno Unito, Belgio, Francia, Paesi Bassi, Germania, Austria, Danimarca, Spagna, Stati Uniti, Australia, Brasile, Argentina e Uruguay.
