More than two years ago researchers from the University of Cincinnati unearthed a 3,500-year-old tomb in the southwest of Greece. The tomb belonged to a Bronze Age warrior nicknamed the “Griffin Warrior,” and contained many treasures, such as four gold signet rings, that have challenged previous notions about the origins of Greek civilization.

ANNOUNCEMENT

This year the Biennale College – Theatre project seeks again to adopt the spirit of a science laboratory: a place of postulation and debate. The Biennale, as a space open permanently to encounter and experimentation, wishes to become established as a valuable opportunity for artists, scholars, spectators, theatre lovers. A factory of ideas that explore the potential of theatre: languages, codes, techniques and technology, the sciences of the stage provide the guidelines for a systematic evaluation, entrusted to masters and experts from around the world.

The Biennale College – Theatre 2013 will offer seventeen workshops.

The programme schedules participants to attend the workshops in the morning and through the early afternoon, the meetings in the late afternoon and the performances in the evenings (with specific discounts, limited places).

For all the workshops that require the submission of a video with no further specifications, it is understood that the video must show the applicants’ work for the theatre.

The deadline for the submission of the applications is June 3^rd.

Workshops for the creation of a short final production based on Shakespearian characters, to be performed before an audience on the last day of the Festival.

The Director Àlex Rigola will select the applicants in collaboration with the Masters conducting the individual workshops: their decision will be final and the results of the selection will be announced to the winners by June 17^th 2013.

Rem Koolhaas - ex Mercati Generali Roma

OMA proposes to redevelop a well known traditional Italian market place, the Mercati Generali, into a modern civic and entertainment centre. In doing so OMA translates the contemporary shopping mall and supermarket phenomenon, both of which have come to threaten the very existence of a way of life that has defined Italian culture for centuries: street market shopping.

The project is located on the outskirts of Central Rome in a strategic position between Via Ostiense and the Garbatella district. Several of the buildings on the site date back to ancient Rome. Unfortunately, however, these structures have remained, for at least their recent history, disheveled and underutilized – solemn figments of past glories.

Traditional market-huts are to be transformed into free standing shops or "pavilions" while staggered and roof terraces produce a three dimensional topography, dramatising the unique sights and sounds of the site. The green streetscape and cafés inserted between the old structures can further add to a street atmosphere. 

Transforming this section of Rome into a live performance area is carried out with commercial and cultural elements of a central cinema, capable of hosting international events, such as the Roman film festival, as well as a theatre for 3,000 people, art galleries, sport and recreational areas. 

Five new main entrances, located alongside main arterial roadways, suggest a greater interaction between the different districts the market borders whilst aiding movement between the different programs within the complex.

Topographical Amnesias, il teatro nel cemento armato

The play Nomads, by theater company Armatrux, was another phase of the Topographical Amnesias project. The event was an architectural intervention which transformed a previously under-utilized space with airs of a trash dump. Architecture, landscaping and environmental reclaiming intermingle and worked as an urban set for the theater play. Topographical Amnesias is part of a long research by Vazio S/A on urban voids, the body, events and art performances.

In 1979, the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, commissioned Richard Avedon, renowned for his portraiture and fashion images, to produce an exhibition documenting ordinary people of the western United States. Avedon spent six years traveling thousands of miles from Mesquite, Texas, to Sacramento, California, from Reliance, Wyoming, to Deadwood, South Dakota, photographing local people all along the way. The result was an unforgettable cast which constitutes the historic series In The American West
.

Avedon sought to portray the human condition, and thus his subjects do not conform to romanticized, Hollywood archetypes of the West. His exploration marked a time of great boom and bust, during which towns quickly sprang up only to become obsolete as soon as resources depleted. The faces of blood and dirt-stained laborers, carefully groomed cowgirls, and gaunt drifters reflect the diversity of inhabitants and their experiences. Avedon's photographs were taken with a large-format Deardorff camera, which allowed the enlargement of prints to be greater than life-size, thereby emphasizing the images' subtle details. The final portraits were first exhibited at the Amon Carter Museum in 1985 and have since appeared in fifteen solo exhibitions around the world.

To photograph these unknown subjects, Avedon employed many of the same techniques as for his portraits of famous people. The blank white background, the subject's direct eye contact with the photographer, and the monumental scale of the finished prints subvert the traditional language by which status is denoted. Thus the carney worker becomes analogous to the model, the coal miner to the politician. In his own words, Avedon extended a heroic province "generally reserved for politicians, celebrities, models, and the wealthy to the purview of those we often ignore."

Richard Avedon (1923-2004) is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Born in New York City, Avedon began his professional photographic career in 1942 in the U.S. Merchant Marine Photographic Department, and attended the Design Laboratory at the New School. He began work as a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar in 1945, eventually joining rival Vogue magazine, where he would remain on staff until 1988. In 1992 he was named the first staff photographer for The New Yorker. He received a Master of Photography Award from the International Center for Photography and his work is included in the collections of MoMA, the Smithsonian, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with countless other museums and institutions worldwide. He is the only photographer to have had two major exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Richard Avedon established The Richard Avedon Foundation during his lifetime. Based in New York, the Foundation is the repository for Avedon's photographs, negatives, publications, papers, and archival materials.

BRUNO MUNARI: MY FUTURIST PAST

The exhibition Bruno Munari: My Futurist Past aims to investigate the activity of one of the most complex, creative and multi-faceted figures of Italian 20th century art. It will analyse Bruno Munari’s aesthetic development from his initial Futurist phase (around 1927) to the post-war period (up to 1950) when, as one of the founders of the Movimento Arte Concreta, he became a point of reference for a new generation of Italian artists. It will also illustrate how his pioneering work exerted an influence that stretched far beyond the borders of his native country.

Bruno Munari began his career within the Futurist movement. From the very beginning, he was concerned with exploring the possibility of representing painting spatially through a continuous flow of forms rendered mutable through the incorporation of a temporal dimension, in accordance with the theories of Giacomo Balla and Fortunato Depero in their 1915 Manifesto ‘Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe’. Munari described the roots of his work as his ‘Futurist past’, and the movement’s ambitious scope certainly informed his kaleidoscopic career, leading him to work across a range of media and disciplines from painting to photomontage, sculpture, graphics, film and art theory. Indeed, his influences were extremely varied, also reflecting the aesthetics and sensibilities of movements such as Constructivism, Dada, and Surrealism… (press release)

Today’s Special | a new design destination reopens in Tokyo

Within the over-crowded industry of lifestyle and interior select shops in Tokyo, CIBONE has managed differentiate themselves largely by collaborating with Norwegian designers on exclusive products. And with only 2 stores in Tokyo, they’ve managed to maintain their footing for quite some time now thanks, in part, to a Nordic trend that appears to have Japan in a never-ending trance.

But the stores, owned by Welcome, indicated a shift in strategy when they rebranded their Jiyuugaoka store and reopened as Today’s Special back in March. CIBONE has always tried to allow their customers to be, what they call, “urban explorers.” That is, to explore their eclectic selection of goods, letting them choose and define their own adventure/shopping experience. Their new store, designed by Jo Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, takes the concept even further, creating a jungle-like interior that blends chaos with cohesiveness. As you walk through the store you will encounter, along with dainty cups and saucers, shrubs, trees, moss and hanging terrariums.

What I love most about this store is all the contrasting elements: from materials to display shelving and even the typography used. Be sure to check it out if you are in the Jiyugaoka area.
